Photography is a hobby of mine, I am an amateur and by no means an expert at it. If I go out hiking in autumn, I always end up taking a TON of pictures of mushrooms. How does that happen? Well… mushrooms really are my favorite models.

What do I know about photography?

Not very much. I just try to find good moments and pretty things. I never altered any of my pictures, I try to get the picture right in the moment. That’s much better than photoshopping it into a perfect picture I think.

In the past I tried making pictures of people at the festivals I went to and always found them lacking. They were both lacking in giving me the vibe the festival gave and I could never get the people … right on the picture if that makes sense. So when I saw I didn’t do both the people and the festival honour on my pictures, I decided I’m just not much of a people photographer. I am much better at nature! Landscapes and mushrooms are my favorite models. You can take your time to find the right angles to get the composition right and natural light is perfect on itself, I rarely have to use the flash. Maybe I’ll get back to different subjects and models in the future, but for now… mushrooms will do. As you would be able to guess by now, mushroom pictures on this website are made by me, unless I say otherwise.

What do I know about mushrooms?

Also not very much anymore. In my teens I had this phase where I dived into local mycology, eventhough I didn’t even know it was called mycology at the time. Back then I knew a lot of the mushrooms that exist in Netherlands and the countries that are bordering it. Most of the knowledge slipped away, but I’m trying to get back into it. My focus will be the mushrooms that I take pictures of, I plan to write little articles about the names and general information. This will be good for both my writing and research skills. And I finally will have a use for all those pictures of mushrooms that I took over the years. Yay!

Mushrooms and mycology is this interest that came back to me. They are interesting and can be so colourfull! Mushrooms are beautiful to look at and maybe a little disgusting because they are associated with death and decay… which makes them intriguing to me.
